In the journey toward ensuring every child receives the care they need, early intervention for hearing loss stands as a crucial milestone. The statistics from Georgia reveal a concerning reality. Kelly Jenkins from Access to Language shares: “The Early Intervention for hearing loss video is a critical public service announcement. Only 20 percent of children in GA who fail their newborn hearing screening are reported as getting follow up hearing testing which results in a serious under identification of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.”
At the heart of this issue lies the profound impact on literacy rates. “This has a dangerous ripple effect as children with hearing loss are not entering early intervention resulting in an alarming literacy rate with only 22% of children who are Deaf or Hard of hearing reading on grade level by 3rd grade.”
The video strikes a delicate balance, blending a light-hearted approach with a poignant message on the critical need for follow-up testing and enrollment in early intervention programs. Jenkins explains, “Brownieland helped us create a video which was told from a baby’s perspective and while it is light hearted it still emphasizes the critical need for follow up testing and enrollment into early intervention.”
Brownieland’s expertise not only ensured the effectiveness of the message but also navigated the intricate landscape of stakeholders within the Deaf communities. As Jenkins further describes, “[we were] collaborating with a Deaf director, Deaf actors and many American Sign Language coaches. There were lots of perspectives and opinions to balance, and Robyn and her team navigated it all with grace and incredible professionalism resulting in an amazing end product!”
As for us at Brownieland, we were honored to showcase their dedication to the cause, offering hope and empowerment for families navigating the complexities of hearing loss. Together, through initiatives like these, we can pave the way for a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of hearing abilities.
