Editor’s Note:

Ray and Jim. Before I was born and for most of my life, there was Ray and Jim. Ray had been adopted by my grandmother, adding one more to her brood of 7, because, at 7 kids, what’s one more? My dad had met him when he was around 10 years old and brought him home after school and he never left. Ray joined the Navy as a weatherman and after he served, he came back to Venice, California to work in my uncle’s drycleaning shop, eventually becoming a partner. Along the way, he met Jim. Jim was about 10 years younger than Ray, but they were perfectly matched. Ray was hilarious, dry and reserved. Jim was gregarious and always rolling his eyes at Ray’s antics. Being in their company was always so much fun. I never knew Ray and Jim were a gay couple until I was in my teens. No one in my family ever commented, or said anything unkind, or really mentioned anything was different. In our family, it was perfectly acceptable for them to be together. Undeniable. Foundational. Jim passed away from an AIDS related illness in the late 90’s and Ray followed not long after. For over 32 years they were together. Loving, kind, funny, a fixture in my life. Never different, never questioned. Always just Ray and Jim.”

Volunteering with Livable Buckhead

For June, the Brownieland Team took part in Livable Buckhead’s inaugural Secret Gardens of PATH 400 volunteer event. Twenty small, themed secret gardens were created along PATH400 by the group of volunteers. The event attendees voted for the top three most creative gardens and we are excited to say that the Brownieland Team took 2nd place! This was incredibly meaningful to us as we are members of the Buckhead neighborhood and appreciate all that Livable Buckhead does for our community. READ MORE
