Brownieland Founding Partner Randy Frosting reflects on meeting President Jimmy Carter at Plains Historic Inn

About 20 years ago, I had the distinct honor of heading to Plains, GA to film President Carter at the historic Plains Inn. He was as gracious as ever and surrounded for most of the interview by the Secret Service and staff.

Before the interview began, we were loading our cameras and lights into the hotel to film the president. As I was taking gear into the back of the hotel, I entered the stairwell. Focused on my task, I saw a gentleman coming down the stairs alone, so I stepped aside to let him pass. When I looked up, I heard the famous voice asking me, “Where’s the lobby?” President Carter was taking the back stairs to the lobby. Completely alone, no Secret Service, no staff. It was just him and me in the stairwell.

I was awestruck to be in his presence. As an Atlanta native, he served as my governor and I was privileged enough to cast my first vote for him in the 1976 election.

I told him where he could find the lobby. He thanked me, shook my hand, smiled that megawatt smile, and went on his way.

Years later, I went to a few of his book signings and saw him again. He was a gracious, humble son of the South, and I am forever grateful to have met him. Rest easy, Jimmy.”
