Writing about Women’s History Month is always hard for me. On the one hand, I am grateful that women’s accomplishments are celebrated and brought to light, but on the other hand, the fact that we need to designate a special month for over 50% of our population to do this shows that we still have a long way to go.
I recently watched a show from the PBS American Experience Series called “Fly With Me“, which tells the story of flight attendants and their fight for equal pay and gender equality. This show encapsulated so much in terms of the fight that women had to (and still have to) win just to prove that they are capable of doing the same job as men. It seems ludicrous now that male “stewards” were paid so much more than female “stewardesses” for doing literally the exact same job. And that class action lawsuit was determined in the 80’s. Only 40 years ago.
The lesson we need to take away from Women’s History Month and any other months that celebrate underrepresented members of our society is that the fight continues. Never take any wins for granted, and never rest on your laurels. Our mothers and grandmothers fought for us to have the rights we have and we must keep fighting to not only hold those rights but earn more parity. Watch the documentaries, read the books, and learn how to get involved. It’s up to us to make a difference.”
