Last year, Brownieland’s Robyn Kranz volunteered as a coach with Girls On The Run Atlanta, a nonprofit that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Robyn was so inspired by her volunteer experience that she has returned for another season as a volunteer coach with GOTR Atlanta!
My experience volunteering for Girls on the Run has been incredibly rewarding. We have a full team this year, so it’s been a privilege getting to know all of the girls and helping them discover their “star power,” or that special thing inside them that makes them unique and helps them to shine. We have incorporated a cape and mask that we let the girls wear when they are nominated for the Energy Award, which is given to a girl by their peers for their outstanding performance during practice. The girls have loved wearing the cape and "flying” in it. I’ll share a secret: I tried it on one time, and I have got to say, I did feel a little bit like a superhero.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit dedicated to helping young women fulfill their potential by decreasing the percentage of at-risk activities and empowering a generation of self-aware girls who are tomorrow’s role models for a healthy, balanced lifestyle. GOTR offers a life-changing, experiential learning program that combines training for a 5k with character building and self-esteem enhancing activities. The program objective is to reduce the display of at-risk behaviors among participants by providing the girls with the tools to make healthy decisions and form positive self-images. GOTR serves girls in 3rd to 8th grades in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett. Approximately 52% of participants receive a full or partial scholarship. GOTR is proud to have never turned a girl away because of her family’s financial status. Nationally, there are 200+ councils in all 50 U.S. states using the same curriculum and program structure. Girls in Title 1 schools can participate on a full scholarship and receive the program, 5k registration (for the participant & family member) as well as a pair of running shoes.
