Brownieland Volunteers with Meals On Wheels Atlanta

For our August Volunteer Project, the Brownieland Team volunteered with Meals on Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) in honor of National Senior Citizens Day! Our team assisted in the kitchen by preparing nourishing meals to be distributed to homebound and low-income seniors residing in Fulton County. Meals Service, MOWA’s flagship program, provides meals to seniors in Atlanta who are unable to afford or access adequate nutrition supporting MOWA’s vision to ensure that no Atlanta area senior goes hungry, cold, or forgotten.

For more than 50 years, MOWA has supported senior independence through meals, shelter, education and community. MOWA delivers 200,000 nourishing meals to frail or homebound seniors in Atlanta annually, provides Home Repairs Services, manages seven Neighborhood Senior Centers, an Adult Day Health Center for seniors experiencing Alzheimer’s and dementia, and a senior companion program along with additional partnerships and programs.

The Meals On Wheels Atlanta Fresh Food Partnership provides locally sourced fresh produce to feed seniors improving their nutrition and health. MOWA partners with farmers markets, local growers, and businesses to provide fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced meal plan. MOWA offers an Emergency Pantry Program which serves as a critical stop-gap for seniors waiting to receive home-delivered meals. Seniors receive a bag filled with a month-long supply of shelf-stable items.

Yet, Meals On Wheels Atlanta doesn’t just deliver meals to seniors but also include their pets with the Meals On Wheels Pet Food Program. For many homebound clients, their pets are the only family they have. However, because of income restrictions, they struggle to provide their furry friends with the care they need.
