Brownieland March Volunteer Project featuring International Rescue Committee Atlanta

For our March Volunteer Project, Brownieland donated to the refugee crisis in Ukraine through the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Atlanta. IRC Atlanta creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to integrate and thrive in Georgia communities. A gift to the International Rescue Committee allows the organization to deliver comprehensive help to people affected by humanitarian crises. According to the IRC Atlanta website: “Over 3.5 million refugees have been forced to flee Ukraine. The IRC is on the ground in Poland supporting displaced children and families with vital supplies.”  

As stated on the International Rescue Committee’s website: 

For almost 90 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been responding to the world’s worst humanitarian crises. When a new crisis strikes, the IRC’s emergency team swiftly activates to determine the most effective way to reach people in need. Our response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has killed hundreds of civilians and displaced almost a million people so far, is no different. Our team quickly deployed to neighboring Poland, where we are working with partners to assist arriving refugees. We are also working with partners inside Ukraine, supporting the evacuation of women and children and providing emergency aid to people who had to flee their homes.

A recent article in The Atlanta-Journal Constitution covers the humanitarian work being done by Georgia organizations in response to the situation in Ukraine. As stated in the article, the IRC and local agencies are still helping refugees from other countries to resettle in Georgia. Since opening in 1979, the IRC’s locally funded office in Atlanta has welcomed more than 27,000 refugees from over 65 countries to resettle in communities across the state. A committed staff of more than 100 professionals works together with volunteers to assist families in reuniting and rebuilding their lives in the greater Atlanta area. 

The IRC Atlanta offers a broad range of programs, including resettlement and case management services, adult education classes, youth programs covering ages 5 to 24, employment assistance, asset-building resources, community health response programs, and immigration services. Furthermore, the IRC Atlanta provides a safe place to live, a furnished apartment, access to quality health care services, English and job skills classes, and employment services to ensure refugees can successfully integrate into their new communities and achieve economic self-sufficiency.
