Around Thanksgiving, most volunteering thoughts turn to food banks and helping with food security. Brownieland had the opportunity to volunteer with Second Helpings Atlanta, an organization that picks up perishable foods from grocery stores, events, and other locations, and delivers it to front-line agencies feeding the hungry in Atlanta.
For our November Volunteer Project, the Brownieland Team lent a hand with the Food Rescue Driver program. We were able to rescue over 100 lbs of baked goods, delivering them to one of the many agencies that help distribute food!
Second Helpings Atlanta is a nonprofit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the Metro Atlanta area by rescuing surplus food and distributing it to those in need. With a community of over 450 volunteers, SHA serves as the link between the network of Food Donors and Partner Agencies who feed the hungry on a daily basis. Second Helpings Atlanta operates in the Metro Atlanta area, including Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton Counties, with ambitious plans to expand into neighboring counties in the future.
How can you help? There are many ways to give back to Second Helpings Atlanta.
- Food Donors donate surplus food that would otherwise end up in a landfill. These generous corporate, retail and academic food donors represent the initial step towards fighting food insecurity.
- Seven days a week, donated food is picked up by Second Helpings Atlanta Volunteer Drivers and delivered to more than 45 Partner Agencies across the Atlanta metropolitan area.
- Second Helpings Atlanta Volunteer Drivers rescue food from a network of Food Donors, transport it to one of the SHA Partner Agencies and return home in 90 minutes or less.
- Second Helpings Atlanta is committed to “Driving Out Hunger One Mile at a Time.” SHA needs your help as a Financial Supporter enabling them to rescue food to serve the more than 1.1 million food insecure people living in the Metro Atlanta community.
