Second Helpings Atlanta Fights Hunger in Metro Atlanta

Over the years, Brownieland has admired the work of Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA), a nonprofit food rescue organization with a mission to reduce hunger and food waste in the Metro Atlanta area by rescuing healthy, nutritious, surplus food and distributing it to those in need. In 2019, Brownieland lent a hand with SHA’s Food Rescue Driver program. We were able to rescue over 100 lbs of baked goods, delivering them to one of the many agencies that help distribute food. When we volunteered with Second Helpings Atlanta, the Brownieland Team experienced firsthand the incredible work this organization does to make a difference throughout Atlanta communities.

Volunteers are the heart of Second Helpings Atlanta. With a community of over 300 volunteers, SHA serves as the link between a network of food donors and partner agencies that feed the hungry on a daily basis. The food SHA rescues every day gets diverted from landfills and is used to feed those in need, making Atlanta a more environmentally responsible metropolitan area. SHA offers volunteer opportunities through a variety of programs like driving a food rescue route or assembling and packing food donations. You can also make a monetary donation. Every five-dollar gift equips SHA with the ability to rescue and deliver over 24 pounds of food, enough for more than 20 healthy meals. No matter how busy your schedule may be, you are sure to find a way to give back to those in need with the help of this remarkable organization.

During the summer months, many of Georgia’s students lose access to meals they usually receive at school, leaving them food insecure until fall. Second Helpings Atlanta has stepped up to the plate by providing more food to children, teens, and families through their Summer Hunger 2022 campaign. SHA provides food to 69 nonprofit partner agencies that support children and families facing summer hunger. So far, over one million pounds of food have been delivered in 2022!

Another summer partnership Second Helpings Atlanta has cultivated is the All At Once Non-Profit Partnership for Jack Johnson’s 2022 Summer Tour. All At Once is Jack’s social action network connecting nonprofits with people who want to take action and give back to their community. This year All At Once is promoting sustainable and equitable food systems. With this partnership, SHA will be tabling at the Jack Johnson concert in Atlanta on August 20th, giving away 2 FREE tickets to the show, and raising money that will be doubled by the Johnson Ohana Foundation up to $2,500!

Second Helpings Atlanta works with over 75 food donors and partner agencies annually and mobilizes over 300 volunteers to carry out its mission. Over the past eighteen years, SHA has rescued and delivered 18,331,652 pounds of surplus food, which is enough to create 15,276,377 meals (1.2 pounds of food provides one healthy meal – Feeding America). In 2021, SHA embarked on a new partnership program, Meals with Meaning. Through the Meals with Meaning Atlanta program, SHA and its incredible volunteers assemble and distribute 2000 four-serving meal kits each week. That’s 8000 meals going to neighbors in need every single week. Currently, SHA is working towards packing their 500,000th meal through the Meals with Meaning program and will celebrate that impressive milestone on September 14th in honor of Hunger Action Month. Be sure to check out SHA’s social media channels for more information.

Brownieland is honored to partner with Second Helpings Atlanta to produce a video for their upcoming event, Full Plates, Full Hearts. This event will honor Sheri Labovitz and Liz Blake, two vital champions of SHA’s mission. Participants will celebrate the impact of Second Helpings Atlanta, reflect on the growth of the last eighteen years, and cast a bold vision for the organization’s future. Full Plates, Full Hearts will be held at Mercedes Benz Stadium (MBS). SHA is the official food rescue partner of MBS. Together, they have rescued over 198,430 pounds of surplus food from the venue following Falcons and Atlanta United games, concerts, and private events.

There are many ways to support Second Helpings Atlanta’s mission to drive out hunger. No matter how you choose to lend a hand, we hope that you will join SHA to meet the needs of Atlanta’s hungry, and together, we can “Drive Out Hunger One Mile at a Time.”
