Second Helpings Atlanta is a nonprofit food rescue organization with a mission to reduce hunger and food waste in the Metro Atlanta area by rescuing healthy, nutritious, surplus food and distributing it to those in need. Every day, the food rescued by SHA gets diverted from landfills and used to feed those in need, making Atlanta a more environmentally responsible metropolitan area. Volunteerism is at the heart of Second Helpings Atlanta. With a community of over 200 volunteers, SHA serves as a link between their network of food donors and partner agencies who feed the hungry on a daily basis.

When we volunteered with Second Hand Atlanta, the Brownieland Team experienced firsthand the incredible work this organization does to make a difference in the Atlanta community. Second Helpings Atlanta offers various programs and ways individuals and organizations can get involved to support their mission, including its 90-Minute Model, Full Plate Project, Corporate Engagement, and Food For Thought Programs. Another initiative from SHA is Meals With Meaning, a partnership program with Second Helpings Atlanta, HelloFresh, Pratt Industries, and the City of Atlanta to assemble, package, and distribute 2,000 HelloFresh meal kits providing 8,000 meals every Wednesday.

On November 17th, SHA held its Second Helpings Atlanta Day of Giving, which turned out to be the largest single-day fundraising event in the history of Second Helpings Atlanta! The premise of the campaign was to celebrate a huge milestone of distributing 100,000 meals from their Meals with Meaning program and raise funds to continue their mission and work to reduce food waste and hunger in Atlanta. Every gift made a huge impact. For example, a donation of $5 equips SHA to rescue and deliver over 20 pounds of food, enough for more than 18 healthy meals. With the support of generous donors, SHA raised $63,510, allowing them to rescue and deliver 254,040 pounds of surplus food, enough to create 211,700 healthy meals. Hear what Second Helpings Atlanta has to say about its Atlanta Day of Giving campaign:

So far in 2021, Second Helpings Atlanta has rescued over 3 million pounds of fresh, surplus food. That means enough food for over 2.5 million healthy meals could have decomposed in landfills but instead went to our Atlanta neighbors. Second Helpings Atlanta relies on supporters and partners to carry out our mission. With your support, we’ve made an amazing impact in our community – helping Atlanta neighbors have access to more nutritious food – but there’s more to do. With as many as 1 in 7 metro Atlanta residents facing food insecurity, we need your help to close the gap. Make your gift today to help Second Helpings Atlanta drive out hunger!

According to the Second Helpings Atlanta website: Food insecurity has surged due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and SHA is stepping up to answer the call. On average, Second Helpings Atlanta rescues 80,000 pounds of surplus food every week, in addition to delivering thousands of prepared meals weekly to individuals and families in need through their new Full Plate Project. Join SHA as they meet the needs of Atlanta’s hungry. Learn more about ways to give back HERE.
