For the Brownieland Pictures January Volunteer Project, the Brownieland Team packed meals for Open Hand Atlanta, a nonprofit empowering people to live healthier, more productive lives!
Open Hand Atlanta serves a diverse population of men, women, and children with unique nutrition needs. Open Hand’s programs and services are designed to help empower clients with the tools and knowledge they need to better manage their health and assist healthcare providers in the early identification and treatment, as well as the prevention or progression, of many nutrition-sensitive illnesses. Open Hand Registered Dietitians plan balanced seasonal menus tailored to the level of nutrition care determined for each client’s needs. They offer nutrition programs and services including meal programs, nutritional education programs, and collaborative programs.
Open Hand’s prepared meal programs serve a variety of clients in a number of settings. Primarily, Open Hand provides freshly cooked health-promoting meals, combined with snacks or supplements, to meet the daily nutrition needs of low-income men, women, and children who are dealing with a chronic disease in addition to homebound seniors and disabled individuals.
Open Hand’s evidence-based nutrition education programs are designed to empower patients and caregivers to take control of their health with nutrition topics ranging from portion control, healthy eating habits and hands-on food prep to physical activity, gardening, goal-setting, and self-management. Nutrition education is offered to at-risk individuals from all walks of life — from low-income youth and families to seniors, from veterans to victims of abuse.
Open Hand Atlanta believes in partnering with the community to positively impact health and social services, and work closely with several other nonprofit organizations to implement collaborative programs that address these issues. It is only through these valued collaborative relationships that Open Hand Atlanta can carry out their mission and touch the lives of thousands of those in need.
At Open Hand, people from all walks of life come together to touch the lives of thousands of others who are not as fortunate. Volunteers have a lot of fun in the process—due in part to the wonderful food service and distribution staff that, along with other remarkable volunteers, make them feel as though they are always among friends. Without the dedication of each and every one of these incredible people, Open Hand Atlanta simply could not do their vital work in the community. Volunteer opportunities include meal packing, meal delivery, market basket packing, cooler bag packing, culinary assistance, and special events administration.
