The Best of Brownie featuring the Fugees Family & Agnes Scott College (VIDEO)

In celebration of Brownieland’s 10-year anniversary, we are featuring the #Best of Brownie series where we look back through the years showcasing a client and their mission.

This month, in honor of World Refugee Day, Brownieland is spotlighting programs in Atlanta that assist refugees in our city. We kicked off June by organizing a donation drive for the Atlanta International Rescue Committee. For our Best of Brownie this month, we are featuring a video Brownieland produced in partnership with the Fugees Family and Agnes Scott College.

The Fugees Family operates a summer academic program in partnership with Agnes Scott College that is focused on language and math, the arts, and physical fitness. The curriculum was developed by Agnes Scott Professor of Education, Toby Emert, especially for the Fugees, and is delivered in small groups by qualified teachers.

In 2004, Coach Luma Mufleh started a Fugees team to provide refugee boys with free access to organized soccer. Her devotion to the boys extended beyond the soccer field and she found ways to support their lives in their new country through schooling and soccer. The Fugees Academy has a unique goal, to educate refugee children in an environment that understands their unique challenges. In a traditional public school system, these children are left behind. They come to the United States after being forced to flee their home countries. Most have lived through traumatic experiences and have spent time in refugee camps, where education is neither a priority nor an option.

The Fugees Academy is the nation’s only school dedicated to refugee education. The school strives to give its students the support, guidance, and direct instruction necessary to put them on a path to better adjustment, high school graduation, and further successes. The school has received SAIS and SACS accreditation, blending creative teaching with academic fundamentals, interwoven with leadership and character building.  Find out more about the Fugees Family HERE.
